Each of my coffee-table bowls is thrown from 25 pounds of stoneware or porcelain. After bisque firing, I layer the glazes on the inside of each piece by pouring and spraying; the overlaps run together and produce different and exciting effects every time. I burnish the undersides of the bowls, but leave them unglazed. I then fire them to cone 10 (1305c) in the wood kiln, in a 13-hour firing. I use thin strips of fir, cedar and birch, blended each time I stoke the firebox. Wood produces the longest flame of any fuel. The flames wrap around the contours of the bowls, toasting the bare clay and sprinkling the glazed interior with ash.
I also make wonderful teapots, mugs and funeral urns.
